Lady Buffs Basketball Report

Notes From Coach Essman

11/25/08  The Lady Buffs Basketball teams traveled to Rockdale Monday, November 17th to take on the Lady Tigers in a three game tilt.  In Varsity action the Lady Buffs pulled away in the second half for a 46-27 win.  The game was sloppy and there were numerous fouls called as Rockdale shot 41 free throws for the game, and the Lady Buffs shot 27.  “I think the 2nd quarter alone lasted 20-30 minutes”, said Coach Essman, “at least it seemed like it.”  The Lady Buffs started cold as they didn’t make a bucket in the first quarter and were down 8-5 to start.  The Lady Buffs matched Rockdale’s score for the rest of the game as they scored 19 in the second for a 24-16 halftime lead.

Lady Buffs Fall To Weimar

Notes From Coach Essman

11/17/08  On Saturday, the Giddings traveled to Weimar and fell to the Lady Cats 54-31. The Lady Buffs started out slow and fell behind 17-9 in the first quarter and could not catch back up.

A combination of early turnovers and poor shooting attributed to the loss. The Lady Buffs shot only 35% from the free throw line and a mere 24% from the floor.

We have to give Weimar credit, they are a good defensive team with two very good players that are their main threats offensively and defensively.

Individual Scoring: Jena Meuth, 12; Brittany Belyeu, 6; Kayla Winkfield, 4; Kelcie Morgan, 4; Caitie Carney, 3; Jordan Masek, 1; and Heather Belyeu, 1.

Giddings Takes Down Moulton

11/11/08   After getting off to a sluggish start the Lady Buffs mounted a second half comeback to take down Moulton Tuesday night at the GHS gym. The event marks the beginning of the 2008 season for the Lady Buffs who bring speed, quickness and an abundance of talent to the court.

Giddings controlled the ball most of the first period but missed many of their shots, a problem that kept them from claiming the early lead.

Using a combination of speed and aggressiveness, Giddings outscored Moulton 14-2 in the third, working well in a team effort to get out in front of the Lady Bobcats.

Giddings made some adjustments on defense that proved to be effective. They worked hard to clog up the middle, forcing several consecutive turnovers that resulted in numerous fast break points.

The Lady Buff's running style of play wore on the Lady Bobcats who spent most of the fourth period "a step behind".

After moving into the lead, the Lady Buffs hammered away at the slower Moulton squad. Freshman Kayla Winkfield led in the scoring effort for Giddings, sinking a total of 13 points. Junior Jordan Masek hit for 10 points and Meagan Bradley added 8.

The Lady Buffs will travel to Weimar on Saturday for their next match-up which is set to begin at 6:00 p.m.
