Lee County Farmers Market starts out small, successful
5/2/09  Saturday, 1:30 p.m.

Four vendors turned out this morning for the first Lee County Farmers Market but by 11 a.m. most were sold out and looking forward to Wednesday when they'll bring more fresh produce in to sell to the community.

Growers Leroy Faske and Steven Wachsmann sold products that were grown in the Manheim area. Leona Fowler, who is a Giddings grower, and Dave Bishop, who has Black Coyote Farms in Paige, were also set up to sell.

Everyone in the group seemed to have had a positive experience and they said they expect the market to grow. The growers were pleasantly surprised, but a little overwhelmed, this morning with people there ready to buy when the market opened at 10 a.m. Since it was the first time for a market in Giddings, no one knew what to expect.

The idea for the market has been "kicked around" for over a year, according to Denise Harlan, Director of the Giddings Area Chamber of Commerce. This year it finally became a reality. She added that there is a real need for the market in Giddings where consumers want fresh products available. Harlan said she is anticipating growth both in the number of venders who participate and in the number of buyers, once word gets out.

A few of the items available today were: new potatoes, spinach, peas, cilantro, onions, asparagus, green beans, broccoli, fresh dill and yard eggs. The long drought has affected the amount of locally grown produce that is available, a few registered growers were unable to attend today's market as a result. Recent rains have helped so the public can expect more venders at the market in the coming weeks.

The Lee County Farmers is a certified Texas market and was recently registered with the State of Texas as a Go Texan market. The market is located on the west side of Giddings at the Lee County General Store. Market hours are Saturday from 10 a.m. - 1 p.m., and Wednesday from 3 p.m. - 6 p.m. Organizers are planning to celebrate a grand opening for the market on Saturday June 6th.

For more information about the market or becoming a vender contact Denise or Debbie at the Giddings Area Chamber of Commerce, 979-542-3455.
