Three children killed, four others injured in crash at Hwy 21 and Hwy 290 Sunday

Three children were killed and four others were injured as a result of a Sunday afternoon crash on Highway 21 near Paige.

The accident happened at approximately 4:22 P.M. at the intersection of Highway 290 and Highway 21. According to the Department of Public Safety (DPS) a 2000 Dodge Caravan, driven by Tiffany Bowman, age 30 of Houston, failed to yield right-of-way while exiting Highway 290. Bowman's vehicle was struck "broadside" by a 2004 Dodge Ram pickup that was driven by Michael Scholze of San Antonio. Scholze was traveling eastbound on Highway 21 when collided with Bowman.  

Three children, ages five, eight, and nine, were pronounced dead at the scene by Bastrop County Justice of the Peace Katherine Hanna. All three were riding in the Dodge Caravan and were from Houston. None of them was wearing a seatbelt.

According to the DPS report, all of the injured were also traveling in the Dodge Caravan, two were taken to Brackenridge Hospital and two were taken to Dell Children's Hospital in Austin. The driver, Tiffany Bowman had incapacitating injuries due to blunt force trauma. Bowman was not wearing a seat belt. A passenger Pricilla Gonzales, age 26 of Houston, also received incapacitating injuries due to blunt force trauma. Gonzales was wearing a seatbelt. Two children, ages one and six were critically injured with blunt force trauma, neither was wearing a seatbelt.
