According to the  Sheriff’s Department report, after the accident Eulalio Montoya, 19 of Giddings, walked to a house located on CR 106 and told the residents that he wrecked his truck and that it went off the bridge and into the bottom of the creek.

DPS Trooper Goodson and Lee County Sheriff’s Deputy Aderhold were dispatched to the scene. A wrecker service from LaGrange was called in to pull the truck from the creek.

Montoya was arrested for allegedly driving while intoxicated (DWI) and transported to the Lee County Jail.

Local case of identity theft prompts reminder from Giddings PD

2/18/09  The Giddings Police Department has sent out a message this week reminding citizens of the risks involved in identity theft.

Giddings police officer Benjamin Connolly was called to the front lobby  of the police station on Thursday, February 12th in reference to a subject who claimed to be a victim of identity theft. Officer Connolly interviewed the man, Jason Guajardo of Giddings who reported that someone had used his identity.

The case is currently under investigation by authorities.

A message attached to a recent police incident report  indicated that every two minutes an "identity crime" occurs. The statement warned that if your personal information, such as a social security card, is lost [or stolen] you should report it immediately.

A recent Associated Press/FOX News report stated that in 2008 cases of identity theft rose 22% to 9.9 million. One reason noted for the increase was the depressed economy.

The report pointed out that the cost per incident was 31% lower when a prompt reporting of the crime had occurred.
