Hunting season continues for those with special seasons (see hunting
guide) as well as predator, fur-bearing animal and feral hog. It
used to be once general gun season was over, the shooting stopped,
but with extended seasons, predator contests and hog eradication,
hunters enjoy their respective sport a little more than the average
hunter. If you haven’t filled your freezer yet there’s still time.
It’s time to start talking about fishing. I’ve been watching people
fish the creeks but haven’t seen them catching anything. The creeks
have been dry for awhile so there hasn’t been significant run-off
from ponds and tanks to put fish in local water bodies. This doesn’t
mean fish aren’t being caught, just that chances are better with
more rainfall.
Lake Somerville remains the same except for picking up a few inches
of water here and there. Rocky Creek Park has the only boat ramp
available unless one’s watercraft may be carried to the water. I’ve
had reports of slab crappie being caught at Big Creek Marina.
Lake Somerville did not experience a die-off during the summer so
fish are in the lake. The old adage, 100 percent of the fish are in
10 percent of the lake couldn’t be truer than now! Getting to them
is the problem. For those awaiting the annual white bass run, it
won’t take place here unless we have one heck of a rain. Catfish and
bass are still being caught in fair numbers to select fishing forums
and reports.
For those readers who are members of the Lee County Wildlife
Association, I will give a “state of the county” report at the
annual meeting in February. For now I am closing hunting cases from
last year and attending training sessions around the state. I look
forward to seeing everyone this spring/summer.
