Game Wardens participate in District II Youth Hunt
This past weekend, me and several other game wardens participated in
our annual District II youth hunt. This is something we’ve been
doing for the past 18 years or so. Although the turnout wasn’t as
big as past hunts, we all had a good time.
The Tri-Kappa Ranch of Fayette County hosted our annual event and
provided food, fire and fellowship. Several youth harvested their
first deer and one young man from Lee County harvested his first
buck, a 41/2 year old 8 pointer. The kids witnessed firsthand the
end result of white-tailed deer management.
On Sunday, the Footprints Family Ranch of Lee County hosted a youth
hunt for two 10 year old hunters. One, attempting to harvest his
first deer, the other, experiencing hunting for the first time, had
fun and asked a lot of ten year old questions. The deer weren’t
cooperating and just as we were exiting the blind, two feral hogs
approached the feeder. Well, now the ranch is minus one boar hog.
I didn’t receive a favorable response last year when requests for
host ranches was broadcasted. For those who are still apprehensive
or have questions, the look on faces of kids patiently awaiting
their quarry is priceless. Openings for the 2012-2013 season are now
open.
On Friday, February 3, 2012, the Lee County Wildlife Association
will host their 15th annual meeting and fundraiser at Giddings Son’s
of Herman hall. Exhibits and raffle begin at 5:00 p.m. and meal at
6:30 p.m. This year’s speaker is Mr. Clayton Wolf, Wildlife Division
Director from Austin. Flyers are posted throughout the county with
additional information or one may contact the Lee County Extension
office.
