Lady Buffs Season Ends in Area Game

Words from Coach Essman

2/24/09  The Lady Buffs Basketball team fell in the Area round of the playoffs to the District 28 runner-up Edna Cowgirls last Thursday night in Hallettsville.

The Lady Buffs jumped out to an early 15-5 first quarter lead led by Sophomore Heather Belyeu’s 8 points. They looked to have the momentum, but the tide changed when in the second the Cowgirls took it and outscored the Lady Buffs 18-11 to get within three points of Giddings, 26-23 at the half.

We got into some foul trouble early and that hurt us, at one point I looked at the clock and we had six or seven fouls to their one.  Edna took the lead in the third topping Giddings 15-10, and taking a 38-36 lead into the fourth.

The Lady Buffs got back on top 42-38 but Edna came back and re-claimed the lead that they never again gave up, going on to their 52-43 win.

They got ahead by four or five and we couldn’t convert on our end. We had to start fouling, which lead to them pulling away from us with free throws.  You have to give Edna some credit, we didn’t play our best game but their defense had a little to do with that.

Scoring for Giddings was:  Kayla Winkfield, 12; Heather Belyeu, 10; Jordan Masek, 7; Jena Meuth, 6; Maegen Bradley, 4; Kelcie Morgan and Caitie Carney; 2.

The Lady Buffs ended their season at 24 wins and 12 losses and District 25 3-A Champs.

I couldn’t be more proud of our team and these young ladies, we were picked to finish third but we talked all year about winning district, and not being satisfied with just making the playoffs.  It ended earlier than we would have liked, but in that is our motivation for next season.  The Lady Buffs will return 9 letterman to the 2009 squad with hopes of advancing closer towards the State Tournament.
