Overwhelming response prompts
organization to offer free rabies vaccinations again
Tuesday, July 6, 2010 Because of the large turnout on June 19th for free rabies shots, the Lee County Animal Welfare League ran out of vaccines and regretfully had to turn some pet owners away. Not wanting to leave these animals without up-to-date vaccinations the group will be hosting another free clinic. On Saturday, July 10th from 9 A.M. - 12 P.M. owners can bring their pets for free rabies shots. The event will be held once again at the Texas Animal Control Academy in Giddings. Other shots for cats and dogs will be available at a minimum cost to the owner.

Blue ribbons at Courthouse in April to recognize Child Abuse Awareness month
Wednesday, March 10, 2010 In an effort to recognize the month of April as Child Abuse Awareness month, Lee County Commissioners voted Monday to allow the Children's Advocacy Center to put up blue ribbons at the courthouse. Representatives from the Advocacy Center will also wrap the trunk of one tree, on the courthouse lawn, with blue lights so that awareness continues throughout the nighttime hours. Julie Elliott, Outreach Coordinator (Lee and Fayette Counties) for the Center, told the commissioners that during the period from September 2008 through September 2009, 58 children in Lee County experienced child abuse. In other action Commissioners approved a motion allowing County Attorney Martin Placke to proceed with the transfer of Lee County Texas' ownership of the Tanglewood School District No. 12 to the Tanglewood Volunteer Fire Department (TVFD). The transfer will be made as a donation to the TVFD. Commissioners also approved a motion to allow Mr. Placke to file an "Affidavit of Fact" regarding mineral royalty interest under County Road 117. The Affidavit will establish that Lee County makes no claim to mineral interest under the road. The Commissioner's Court discussed but took no action on two other agenda items. They considered approving an "amended invoice" from Wiss, Janey, Elstner Associates, Inc. The invoice relates to the firms work on the Courthouse Master Plan Supplement and Grant Writing Services. The work was necessary as part of Lee County's application to the Texas Historical Commission for Courthouse Preservation Grant funds for the repair of the Courthouse. The firm is attempting to bill the county $7,602.19. This amount is in addition to $22,871.00 which had been previously been billed for services provided by the firm. Late last year, Commissioners approved a proposal (that used the term "budget for the scope of services outlined") submitted by the firm which allowed for at total of $25,700.00 in fees. If approved, the "amended invoice" would exceed the proposed amount by approximately $4,773.00. The proposal, dated October 6, 2009, noted "Due to time constraints, we were unable to provide our independent cost estimator with sufficient background documentation to supply us with a firm estimate. We anticipate that this budget will not be used in its entirety, and will provide an updated estimate for our sub-consultant when available." The Historical Commission approved $804,233.00 of the expected total $1,206350.00 Emergency Stabilization and Monitoring Project. Lee County Commissioners tabled this agenda item until more information regarding the situation and the proposal was made available. |
