Giddings Faces LaGrange Friday, both teams sport 2-0 district records

1/15/09  The Lady Buffs will face LaGrange Friday night in their third 2009 district outing, the varsity contest is set to begin 7:30 p.m.

Both of the teams currently hold 2-0 conference records going into the longtime district rivalry matchup.

Giddings beat Sealy last week by a score of 56-21. The girls then traveled to Bellville this past Tuesday and took down the Lady Brahmas 66-34.

LaGrange's district record consist of two wins, both games were on LaGrange's home court. The Lady Leps beat Bellville 59-34 and Smithville 56-50.

Three seniors have led the Lady Leps so far this season: post, Katy Scott #30; forward, Jasmine Lewis #20; and guard, Brittany Brooks #10. The  three have combined for more than half of the team's points scored in the last two (district) wins.

Giddings has seen a marked improvement in their young squad - which consist of mostly sophomores and juniors who have spent a lot of time on the court this year.

Freshman Kayla Winkfield has excelled for the Buffs on the offensive end of the court, but is especially effective on defense where she has played an integral roll for Giddings in their defensive pressing situations. Kayla's speed and agility has resulted in an untold number of steals and assist which has helped the Lady Buffs claim their current position at 2-0.

Scoring for the Lady Buffs has been wide spread, a plus for the speedy squad as they display their self-imposed "run and gun" approach to the game.

Lady Buffs sweep Bellville

1/13/09  All three Lady Buffs basketball teams beat Bellville Tuesday night bringing home commanding victories and a three game sweep.

The varsity squad racked up 66 points to Bellville's 34 holding the advantage for the entire game.

The varsity record sits at 2-0 in district play and 16-10 overall.

The JV squad smacked Bellville 45-19 and the freshman team picked up a 51-28 win.

The girls will host LaGrange on Friday, January 16th beginning at 5:00 p.m.

Lady Buffs Freshmen team moves to 21-0 record

1/12/09  The Lady Buffs Freshman team rolled over Thrall 47-8 at home on Tuesday, the win set their record at 20-0. The leading scorer for Giddings was Allyson Roberts with 15 points. Nece Reese followed with 12 points, Kalyn Morgan and Darrecia Johnson had 6 apiece. Tanya Moreno hit for 4, Brittainy Gallier and McKayla Alva both added 2 points.

On Friday, the girls played Sealy and continued with a 59-20 win to start district competition at 1-0. Once again Giddings got off to a good start, leading 36-9 by halftime. The squad then coasted the rest of the way. Leading all scorers was Darrecia Johnson with 20 points and 10 rebounds. Allyson Roberts racked up 13 points, Nece Reese had 10 and Kalyn Morgan sank 8. MaKayla Alva, Skyler Lehmann, Tavia Richards, and Marissa Ruiz each added 2 points.

The ladies will be on the road Tuesday when they travel to meet the Lady Brahmas in Bellville.

Sealy overwhelmed by Giddings' fast-paced performance

1/9/08  The Lady Buffs started district competition off right Friday, jumping out to a 13-0 lead over Sealy within the first few minutes of the game. The first score for the Lady Tigers came on a free throw late in the first period. Giddings claimed a 16-5 first-quarter advantage.

The Lady Buffs moved the ball around well taking advantage of a slower, less-disciplined Sealy squad. Giddings racked up numerous steals, enabled mostly by a halfhearted passing effort put forth by the Lady Tigers.

The Lady Buffs left the floor at the break with a 30-10 lead.

Giddings played a fast paced, aggressive game that kept Sealy out of sync and struggling to catch up. Everyone on the Giddings squad handled the ball, which allowed for a well rounded scoring attack that Sealy could not counter.

The Lady Buffs outscored Sealy 26-9 in the second half closing out the district opener with a final score of 56-21.

Maegen Bradley led all scoring with 10 points. Kayla Winkfield followed with 9 points and Jordan Masek added 8. Jena Meuth battled for 7, while Caitie Carney and Cassidy Melcher hit for 5 points a piece. Jennifer Roberts put in 4 and Kelsey Morgan finished with 2.

Giddings will take their 1-0 district start (15-10 overall) to Bellville on Tuesday to meet the Lady Brahmas for game two of their 2009 district run.
