Lady Buffs Freshman Move To 19-0 After Friday Win 12/20/08 The Lady Buffs freshman team moved to 19-0 after defeating Waco Robinson on Tuesday and then Lamar Consolidated on Friday. On Tuesday the squad traveled to Robinson to overtake the Rocketts 46-27. The leading scorers for Giddings were Nece Reese and Darrecia Johnson with 14 points each. Allyson Roberts added to the effort with 8, Kalyn Morgan dropped 7, and McKayla Alva and Tanya Moreno each had 2. The second game of the week was at home on Friday when the girls rolled over Lamar Consolidated 63-24. The Lady Buffs ran up a 19-1 lead in the first quarter and never looked back. Dareccia Johnson stood on the receiving end of a number of great assists and led all the scoring with 25 points. Nece Reese sank 10, Allyson Roberts added 8, and Tavia Richard put in 6. Kalyn Morgan and McKalya Alva both logged 5 points and Skyler Lehmann and Tanya Moreno had 1 point apiece. The two wins advanced the freshmen to a season record of 19-0 going into the Christmas break. Giddings Freshmen Girls Take 1st In JV Basketball Tournament, Record At 17-0 12/16/08 In the first game of the Giddings JV tournamnet, the Freshman Lady Buffs defeated the Rockdale JV team 58-17. Leading the scoring for Giddings was Allyson Roberts with 21 points and 8 rebounds and Darrecia Johnson hit 16 points and had 11 rebounds. Nece Reese had 8 points, Kalyn Morgan 6, McKayla Alva 3, Tavia Richard 2, Brittaini Gallier and Marissa Ruiz had 1 point each. Jacqueline Rodriguez played well on defense. The girls then beat the Manor JV team 53-25. The top scorer for Giddings was Darrecia Johnson with 20 points. Nece Reese had 14, Allyson Roberts made 9, Kalyn Morgan and McKayla Alva each had 4, and Tanya Moreno added 1 point. In the championship game, the Giddings rolled over Gonzales JV 69-37. The ladies led 42-17 at half-time. Allyson Roberts led all scoring with a season high 32 points and a hot hand at the free throw line sinking 10 of 12. Darressia Johnson added 20 points, Kalyn Morgan had 13, Tanya Moreno and Tavia Richard each had 2 points. Marissa Ruiz and Skyler Lehmann played well on defense. Earlier in the week the Freshmen defeated the Elgin Freshmen team, 40-21. Nece Reese led the way with 12 points and 21 rebounds. Darrecia Johnson claimed 10 points and had 10 rebounds. Allyson Roberts followed with 7 points and 8 steals while Tavia Richard hit for 4 points and Kalyn Morgan had 3. Brittainy Gallier and Tanya Moreno each added 2 points. The Freshmen Girls season record now stands at 17-0. 12/16/08 The Lady Buffs hosted their JV tournament last week opening the tournament with a win against Lago Vista 45-43. Then they faced off with Gonzales, but were beaten 40-46. Saturday, the Lady Buffs came back to play in the 3rd place game against Manor. The girls played hard but were defeated 25-49. The JV Lady Buffs traveled to Elgin last Tuesday night and fell to the Lady Wildcats 15-44.Scoring by game: VS.

12/15/08 The Lady Buffs completed a 5-0 week by winning their own tournament December 11th-13th. The team won a forfeit over Lago Vista, and then beat Gonzales, Caldwell, and St. Michael’s Academy to win the round robin varsity tourney.
Against Gonzales, the Lady Buffs took a 34-22
halftime lead and held off a scrappy Lady Apache squad to win 53-48.
Scoring for the Lady Buffs was:

Jena Meuth, 8; Jordan Masek, 6; Brittany Belyeu, 4; Caitie Carney, 4;

In the second game for the day on the 12th,
the Lady Buffs took on old district foe Caldwell.
The game started close as the Lady Hornets took an early lead but
the Lady Buffs closed out the first quarter with a 21-13 lead.
The Lady Buffs extended the lead to 40-19 at the half with
pressure defense and fast breaks and cruised to a 73-38 victory.
“We played really well and got contributions from all of our
players,” noted Coach Essman.
Scoring for Giddings was:
Kelcie Morgan, 10; Jena Meuth, 10; Maegen Bradley, 8; Jennifer
Roberts, 8; Cassidy Melcher, 8; Heather Belyeu, 8; Kayla Winkfield, 7;
Brittany Belyeu, 5; Alex Masek, 5; and Caitie Carney, 4. On Friday, the Lady Buffs took on perennial TAPPS power St. Michael’s Academy of Austin and defeated them 59-52. As with Gonzales, the Lady Buffs took a halftime lead (31-23) and held off the Lady Crusaders in the second half for the win.
“St. Michael’s was a very fundamentally sound
basketball team and had a several very good basketball players, but we
had a deeper bench” said Coach Essman.
“They were a different style of team from Gonzales and we held
both of their runs off in the second half. We are starting to rebound
better and our defense is playing tougher.”

The Lady Buffs began the week by traveling to 4A Elgin and defeating the Lady Cats 62-55. The game was tied at halftime 28-28. The Lady Buffs turned up the pressure in the third period and outscored Elgin in the 13-4. That was the difference in the game as the fourth quarter was a one point advantage for the Lady Buffs (21-20) before a last second three to end the game for the Lady Cats. Scoring for the Lady Buffs was: Kayla Winkfield, 22; Jena Meuth, 13; Jordan Masek, 11 (7-7 FT); Cassidy Melcher, 6; Brittany Belyeu, 5; Kelcie Morgan, 3; and Maegen Bradley, 2. The Lady Buffs push their season record to 11-6 and will be at Waco Robinson on Tuesday, December 16th, then they will host Lamar Consolidated for three games starting with the freshman at 3:00 PM on Friday the 19th. Giddings Set To Host Round Ball Tournament Beginning Thursday (Updated Thursday at 12:35 p.m.) 12/11/08 Giddings is hosting a girls basketball tournament at the GHS gym beginning today. Tournament action gets underway at 8:30 a.m. Besides the Lady Buffs, this JV/Varsity event will feature teams from Caldwell, Lago Vista, St. Michaels, Rockdale, Gonzales, and Manor. The Giddings freshman team will also see action, playing "up" in the JV bracket. The Giddings freshman squad will play their first opponent, Rockdale, at 9:45 a.m. The Giddings JV team will meet Lago Vista at 12:15 p.m. and the Lady Buffs Varsity will take the court at 1:30 p.m. against Lago Vista (first varsity game cancelled).
