Edna nips Luling, gets one point win

The Edna Cowgirls nipped Luling in their bi-district playoff game tonight, the Lady Buffs were watching this contest to learn who their opponent will be for the "Area" playoff game planned for later this week.

Edna got off to an early lead, taking a 12 point advantage by halftime. Luling came back after the break and mounted a comeback as the third period ended tied up at 31. At one point in the second half Luling had a four point lead but Edna managed to take back the lead and claim a one point win 47-46.

Coaches from Edna and Giddings plan to play the "Area" match-up in Hallettsville, but the date and time have not yet been finalized. 


Giddings Hoopsters ranked No. 18 in State poll

2/16/09  The Giddings girls basketball team was ranked No. 18 in the final poll released Sunday by the Texas Girls Coaches Association. This ranking is the Lady Buffs first appearance in the poll this year, and Giddings was the only team from the district to receive a Top 25 ranking.

The only other area team listed in the poll is Round Top Carmine, the Cubettes were put in the No. 3 spot in Conference 1A - Division II.

Besides Giddings six other teams from Region 4 fell into the new poll: No. 3 CC West Oso, No. 6 Hildalgo, No. 15 Cuero, No. 19 Lytle, No. 21 Hondo, and No. 24 Edna.

The Lady Buffs are waiting to find out who they play this weekend, their next opponent will be determined by Monday nights game between Luling and Edna. The winner will advance to the "Area" round of the playoffs, where they will clash with Giddings. According to the UIL playoff bracket "Area" games must be held on Feb. 19th, 20th or 21st.

Giddings advanced to the "Area" round by way of a "bye" which was achieved when the girls won first place in their district. LaGrange and Smithville will also see  playoff action. LaGrange took second place in District 25 and will meet Brookshire Royal who finished third in District 26. Smithville had a third place finish and will take on Stafford who was the runner-up in District 26.

Coach Essman reports on the Lady Buffs, the season finale and the District Championship

2/17/09   The Giddings Lady Buffs basketball team claimed the outright District 25-3A Championship this past Tuesday with a 58-23 victory over Columbus.  With the win, the Lady Buffs ended district with a 9-1 record.

The Lady Buffs did not take Columbus lightly since they only beat them by 4 in Columbus earlier this year.  Giddings jumped out to a 13-4 lead and then outscored the Lady Cardinals 20-1 in the second to take a commanding 33-5 halftime lead.   

“I am proud of the way the kids came out and played with intensity, they earned this championship,” said Coach Essman. "The Lady Buffs controlled the second half for the win, with players distributing the ball well and playing as a team".  

The Lady Buffs honored this year’s Senior players before the game:  Brittany Belyeu, Jennifer Roberts, and India Edwards, who played their last home game.  “These young ladies have been the key to our success this year and have been a great example for our younger players, “ stated Coach Essman.  

Scoring for the Lady Buffs were:  Kayla Winkfield, 18; Brittany Belyeu, 11, Jena Meuth, 9; Cassidy Melcher, 6; Jennifer Roberts, 5; Maegen Bradley, 5; Caitie Carney, 3; and Jordan Masek, 1.

Getting a first round bye in the playoffs, the Lady Buffs traveled to play a warm-up game with host Salado on Friday, February 13th

The Lady Buffs jumped to an early lead but the Lady Eagles fought back and the first period ended 15-15.  The Lady Buffs outscored Salado 12-6 in the second to take a 27-21 halftime lead. 

Giddings lost a player, Jena Meuth, at the end of the second quarter as she left the game with a dislocated finger.  “When she showed me her finger my first reaction was that she needs to go to the hospital now, “ said coach. 

Salado went on a scoring barrage in the third, hitting four 3's in the quarter to take a 40-34 lead heading into the fourth.  The Lady Buffs clawed their way back and were down 45-40 with around four minutes to play.  

“The kids attacked their defense and found the open shooters and it worked out for us,” stated Coach Essman.  The Lady Buffs benefited off some clutch free throws in the fourth by Cassidy Melcher and Kayla Winkfield who were a combined 5-8 from the line; Salado shot 1-6 from the line. 

The Lady Buffs went up 46-45 and held onto the lead and  a 49-47 victory.
