This year the Austin Marathon completed its 18th running, hosting almost 14,000 athletes. The event is a fundraising effort that offers participants the opportunity to qualify for bigger races like the Boston Marathon.

The marathon offers courses for several different categories of athletes, the routes wind through downtown Austin. Thousands of volunteers work the event with its 24 water stops that are manned by different organizations like the Lance Armstrong Foundation, the Young Men's Business League and the Austin Child Guidance Center.

Plumlee, who is a student at Texas Tech University in Lubbock, plans to run the OK Race for the Cure in Oklahoma City, in April.

Benefit auction and stew dinner planned

2/10/09  A benefit auction and stew dinner will be held on February 22, 2009 at the Manheim parish hall to benefit
Victoria Berry, wife of Roger Berry, a resident of the Manheim community. Mrs. Berry's grandchildren attend Immanuel Lutheran School.

Victoria has been battling inflammatory breast cancer since November 2007. This is a rare, aggressive type of cancer. Over the past months she has had chemotherapy and radiation with little or no success. Doctors at MD Anderson, in Houston have offered a study to her to target this type of cancer with a cost of $30,000. Her insurance company will not pay for the experimental treatment.

Friends and residents of the Manheim community are asking for your help.

The auction begins at 2 pm and the stew meal at 4 pm. The meal is free-will donation with ‘to-go’ bowls also available.

Items are needed for the live auction. To donate contact either Alice or Allen Birnbaum at 512-253-6653 or Donna/Edgar Arldt at 512-253-6651, No later than Feb. 20th.

Desserts are also welcome: cookies, brownies or cakes. If you would you like to volunteer, contact Stan/Linda Maass at 512-253-6634

Four New Year's Resolutions You Can Acheive

1/1/09  Just be active - instead of being focused on losing a set number of pounds. Exercise releases endorphins and even a gentle stroll is beneficial for physical health and mental well-being

Go green - evidence has shown that connecting with nature can boost your mood

Learn something new - it will keep your mind stimulated and give you added confidence no matter what your age or station in life

Give back to the community - it can be just as rewarding for you as those you choose to help

It's Beginning To Look A Lot Like Christmas

12/05/08  Steve and Evelyn Roensch loaded up on their John Deere on Thursday to visit local businesses and spread holiday cheer. The duo have dressed up as Santa and Mrs. Claus for years and have become a regular part of the Christmas festivities in the local community.

Rimes Makes New Friends At Lions Camp

9/1/08  Giddings 5th grader Jayla Rimes recently attended Texas Lions Camp in Kerrville and came back excited about the friends she met and the new experiences she had while at the facility.

Jayla went to the July 27th  session of diabetic camp this year, this was the second consecutive year Jayla has been able to attend.

Jayla is the daughter of Eric and Chenna Rimes of Giddings. She is the only girl in a family of five children – she has two older brothers and two younger brothers. Jayla enjoys the camp and uses it as a way to get away from the boys and be with her girlfriends.

At camp children are supervised by counselors and staff members trained to deal with the various medical needs and disabilities the children face. During the diabetic portion of the summer staffers take time to help educate the children about their medical needs like medicine, diet, and their health in general.

Texas Lions Camp is set on 500 acres of prime hill country land that is owned by the Lions Clubs of Texas. The hill country setting makes it possible for children to attempt activities they might never experience. Campers are allowed to go canoeing, fishing, horseback riding, swimming, and climbing. On Friday night the campers are treated to a “camp-out under the stars”.

Texas Lions Camp is available to disabled and diabetic children from all over Texas. The children attend the camp free of charge. Lions throughout Texas fund the camp which has been in operation since its charter in 1949.

The original idea for the camp came about in response to a severe polio epidemic that swept through Texas and changed the lives of countless children. Since then the camp has grown to serve children with many different types of physical disabilities, diabetes and cancer. At present the camp serves more children than at any other time in its history, over 1,500 children attend camp each and every summer.

Jayla says she is planning to go back to camp next year and looks forward to several more summers at the hill country retreat. Jayla will be eligible to attend through age 16 and hopes to return to the camp as a helper or counselor - as soon as she meets the age and training requirements.

The four Lions Clubs in Giddings have had the privilege of sponsoring many kids who have attended the camp though out the years. If you are interested in learning more about the camp visit the link provided below or contact any Giddings Lions Club member.

Thank You, From Andrew Boriack & Family

Andrew Boriack (and his family) continue to battle Hodgkin's Lymphoma in his chest and nodules in the lungs that has been a part of his life for over a year. Andrew's mom, Theresa, took the time to send us a note with the request that we post it for the community to see.

Andrew continues to fight the disease and awaits a Blood Stem Cell Transplant. He will receive the transplant as soon as his tumors show a favorable response to the chemotherapy.

We would like to thank everyone that helped with the Andrew Boriack Raffle Benefit, Bake Sale & Auction.  Thank you, especially, to Rachael & Jeremy Gold and Dana & Paul Kipp. Thank you to Dana Lehmann for posting his story on the Lee County Live website, Jody & Trisha Kalmbach for handling the online auction, Betty Petzold, Kimberly Bowers, Gail Gerdes, Annie Jenke, Eleanor Jenke, and Ellie Pille for all the wonderful help they gave.

Thank you to the numerous people that helped is way too many to list but we know who you are and appreciate all the help and support through this.  Also thank you for all the donated items given for the raffle, bake sale and auction and money donations made straight to his fund and everyone who purchased tickets or items from the auction.

Our appreciation goes out to the staff of Round Top State Bank and Classic Bank for the use of their facilities for the bake sales.

We have been overwhelmed with the prayers and support of family, friends and community through this past year.

We would like to also thank the Pastors at Immanuel Lutheran Church and Alan Smith for coming to see Andrew while in the hospital as well as his friends and family who have visited him at the hospital and at home.

Kyle and Meghan and Andy & Toni Pille (Andrew's grandparents)thank you for supporting Andrew through this past year.

Thank you to our employers.  Energy Transfer for being supportive and understanding with Andrew’s illness and for the time off needed to get better.

Special thanks to The Coffee Well Company (Mike, Libby & Danny), for also being supportive and allowing Theresa the time off to get Andrew through these trying times.

Thank you to Jimmie Luecke and to TX DOT for allowing Douglas and Gordon the time off for doctors appointments, procedures and hospitalizations.

Dr. Melear (Andrew’s Oncologist), Holly & Lisa (Andrew’s nurses) and office staff, we owe a really big thank you to all of you.  Thank you to the nursing staff, caseworker & social workers at Seton Hospital 7 North Oncology who spoil and take care of Andrew like he is one of their own family members.

We continue to hope and pray that once this is all past him Andrew will be a much stronger young man and can get on with his life.  It has been a year since his diagnosis and he has had several setbacks but Dr. Melear and his staff are doing everything they can for him so we can get to the point of taking the next step of getting to Baylor Medical Center in Dallas for a Blood Stem Cell Transplant (using his own Blood Stem Cells).

Again we would like to thank everyone for all the support.

Thank you,

Andrew Boriack, Theresa & Gordon Jenke and Douglas Boriack
