Lady Buffs Softball: Talent, Ability, Experience & Desire

5/1/08  The Lady Buffs softball team is set to battle Splendora for the title of Area Champion beginning this Friday night.

The Giddings squad will enter the game with lots of talent, experience and the desire to knock off the Lady Cats who are ranked No. 1 in the state, according to the most recent poll posted by the Texas Girls Coaches Association (TGCA). They have been wrong before and this group of girls is out to prove them wrong again. Giddings knocked out Sweeny, a team that the TGCA had ranked in the No. 15 spot just before the playoffs started.

                                 Giddings Softball Team

The Lady Buffs have played in tough situations before and have prevailed. Friday they will travel to Magnolia to facedown the Lady Cats and continue their run at the state title. When they win, it will no doubt be a team effort put forth by an extraordinary group of young women who's team slogan for 2008 is "One More Week".

Alix Boes #8: Giddings SoftballAlex plays 1st Base for the Lady Buffaloes and is a senior - 4 year letterman.  Alix has started at 1st Base for the Buffs since she was a freshman and is also the leading “clutch” hitter for the team. She usually bats in the middle of the lineup and has helped the lady Buffs work there way thru some tough games.

Regan Fritsche #5: Regan is a standout Short Stop for GiddingsGiddings Buffaloes Softball and is another senior - 4 year letterman on the team. Regan has worked hard to perfect her fielding abilities at this position and as a result has been known to shut down the left side of the infield. On offense, she hits early in the lineup and does a great job stealing bases. Regan understands the game of softball and will do whatever it takes to help her team win.

Tehsia Krause #11: Teshia has spent the better part of this season playing in right field and filling in as a back up pitcher for Giddings. Teshia has great instincts in the field and has been in the hot seat in many of the Buffs clutch fielding situations. Teshia seems comfortable pulling off big catches to help the Lady Buffs succeed in their quest to rack up victories. At the plate, Teshia is consistent and has good base running ability that adds diversity to the group.

Jordan Masek #6: JGiddings Softballordan is an outstanding sophomore infielder for the Lady Buffs, she currently hold the position of 2nd Base. She makes the infield stronger because of the range she has at 2nd. At the plate, Jordan bats in the number two spot and is a great two strike hitter who never backs down, even under pressure. Jordan is an excellent base runner who brings speed and confidence to this aspect of the Giddings offense.

giddings softballKristen Muniz #12: Kristen Muniz helps hold the Lady Buff’s opponent a bay working hard in the outfield as well as at the plate.  She has spent much of this year’s season for Giddings pulling out “timely” hits in important situations. Batting in the lower part of the lineup Kristen adds to the Lady Buffs attack, getting the job done when called upon. Kristen has also seen success as a pinch runner thought the year.

Lindsey Richardson # 25: Giddings SoftballThe position of catcher, on any softball team, is a position for a leader… Lindsey Richardson is a leader for this Buffaloes squad. Besides the fact that she is a terrific catcher Lindsey has a great knowledge of the game. As a senior - 4 year letterman she possesses the amazing ability to catch runners “sleeping”… either “picking them off” or at the very least shortening their lead off and keeping them close to the base. Lindsey is also a powerful hitter who bats in the number four, clean-up spot. Mozt of the time the opposing pitcher will “pitch around” her, opting to allow the walk rather than face her commanding presence at the plate.

Heather Hartfield #2: Heather is a solid outfielder with a strong arm. She is a team player who has worked hard to help the team achieve the success that has come in the past couple of years. Heather usually sees time in the outfield and has been used as an effective courtesy runner and pinch hitter.

Whitney Weise #3: As a senior - 4 year letterman, Whitney is the Lady Buffs ace pitcher who servesLady Buffs her teammates a a team leader. She has had extreme success from the circle while also maintaining an complete knowledge of every aspect of the game. Whitney displays a wonderful range of pitches that she uses to keep her opponents out of the game. She has pitched most of the regular season games for Giddings and will continue as the group advances in the play-offs. When she is not pitching she can be found in leftfield. At the plate, Whitney bats in the middle of the lineup, realizing a lot of success as a “clutch situation” hitter. In the dugout, Whitney is a team player who usually has her “rally cap” on. Whitney is a "gamer" who displays an unending amount of support and enthusiasm for her teammates.

Keanna Winkfield # 10: Giddings TexasWOW, that’s the best word to describe Keanna’s softball ability. Keanna began her junior year at GHS at 3rd Base but was eventually moved to the centerfield position because of her amazing speed. Much of her season has been spent running, jumping and diving; doing whatever is necessary to “shag” the fly ball fin the Buffs outfield for the out. For her opponents, there aren’t many holes in the outfield because of the wide range of turf she can cover. The outfield is “smaller” when Keanna is there. Batting in the lead off position, Keanna can be lethal. She hits as well as she bunts, and somehow almost always ends up on base. Known for her base running and stealing ability, Keanna adds quite a bit of excitement to every game usually choosing to slide head first, always making it difficult for her opponent to lay down the tag.

Whitney Keith #7: Giddings BuffaloesWhitney took over the 3rd Base position when Keanna was moved to centerfield. In her sophomore year Whitney has done an outstanding job at 3rd and has worked hard to learn the position, getting better with each game. She tries to achieve success with every play and makes the most of every opportunity she gets at the plate.

Caitie Carney # 15: Freshman Caitie Carney came in as a Giddings Softballsurprise contributor to the Lady Buffs this year, playing a few different rolls and filling in as needed for her team. Caitie began her year on the JV squad but quickly rose to the varsity level bringing with her an unusual amount of talent and confidence considering her age. This year she has played all three of the outfield positions and has pitched in several games including Caldwell and Smithville. Caitie's cool and confident manner paid off during the game with Smithville earlier this year when she threw a “no hitter” to lead the Buffs to a 17-0 win over the Tigers (keep in mind she’s a freshman).

Lady Buffs Slam Smithville 17-0

Freshman pitcher Caitie Carney went five innings against Smithville on Saturday pitching a no-hitter as she led the Giddings squad to a 5th inning run rule over the Lady Tigers. Giddings got off to a lead early in the game and then relaxed to enjoy "Senior Day", taking a moment to honor the four senior players who have helped build the Lady Buffs softball program to a top "State" contender. Varsity underclassmen and JV players made tribute to seniors Lindsey Richardson, Regan Fritsche, Whitney Weise and Alix Boes who have set excellent examples of work ethic, sportsmanship and team effort for the younger players to follow.

Giddings will host LaGrange in what could be the most important game of the season. Giddings lost to LaGrange earlier in district play, making Tuesday's home game against the Leopards a "must win" outing for the Lady Buffs as they look for a strong placing when they begin post season play.

Lady Buffs Outlast No. 16 Bellville: Claim 5-3 Win

3/25/08  The Giddings softball team was able to pull out an important win in a close game against the No. 16 Lady Brahmas of Bellville. The Giddings squad battled Bellville for the win, scoring four runs in one inning and holding off a late Bellville charge to seal the victory at 5-3. Senior pitcher Whitney Weise got the win, leading the Lady Buffs to a new district record of 3-1.

Giddings should move up in the Texas High School Girls Coaches Association Poll which had them ranked at No. 19 in their latest tally which was released today. Giddings will face Smithville in Giddings on Saturday, March 29th.

Giddings Slips Past Caldwell

Giddings senior catcher Lindsey Richardson came through in the clutch for the Lady Buffs slapping two homeruns that allowed the Giddings squad to slip past Caldwell 8-6.

Pitcher Caitie Carney Giddings found themselves behind 6-5 in the bottom of the 7th when senior 1st baseman Alex Boes commanded a triple finding herself on 3rd base as the tying run. Leftfielder Whitney Weise got a single to drive in Boes, the game was tied at 6-6. Freshman pitcher Caitie Carney advanced Weise to 2nd but was thrown out at 1st. Catcher Lindsey Richardson came to the plate and slapped her second homer of the night, a two run shot, that ended the game at 8-6.

Freshman Caitie Carney went on record as the winning pitcher.

The Lady Buffs, currently ranked 17th, will travel to Bellville on Tuesday, March 25. The Lady Brahmas are ranked 12th in the Texas Girls Coaches Association poll.

Lady Buffs Take Swing At TaylorGiddings Softball
3/13/08  The Giddings varsity softball squad took the home field against Taylor on Thursday and claimed control of the match immediately. Giddings came out swinging, bruising the Lady Ducks with a lead of 4-0 by the 4th inning. The pitchers from Taylor struggled while Giddings' pitching standout Teshia Krause managed to keep her opponent's bats almost totally silent. The Lady Buffs pounded Taylor for the duration; catcher Lindsey Richardson launched a long ball homer deep over the left field fence. The ever faithful Buff Guys, who were perched over the outfield field wall, promptly autographed the homerun ball and threw it back. The Giddings crew would eventually stretch the lead to an 11-1 final.

Giddings will start their run at the District Championship title on Friday at LaGrange. The Lady Leopards are 17-4 and currently ranked 11th in the state coaches poll. The ranking has some questioning the level of competition LaGrange has faced this pre-season. Friday's other district match-ups include Navasota at  Bellville (16) and Caldwell at Smithville.

Giddings JV Performs Well At Waller Tourney
3/10/08  The Giddings JV Softball team silenced four opponents in the Waller Tournament over the weekend but then fell to 4A Willis in the championship game Saturday evening. The group claimed the 2nd place trophy after battling 5A, 4A, and 3A  schools, shutting out all four of the first teams they played on their way to the finals.
Giddings smashed their first challenger 3A Navasota, 23-0. The group then met 5A Houston Northbrook and defeated them by a score of 25-0. 5A Katy Mayde Creek, a team that proved to be the first worthy opponent for the Lady Buffs, fell to Giddings in a scoreless effort, 9-0.  The next game against 5A Houston Stratford was a close one but the Lady Buffs won and once again shutout their adversary 2-0. Katy Seven Lakes fell in line as the next victim for Giddings, the girls took down the Spartans, 8-0.

Giddings SoftballThe championship match was a showdown between Giddings and Willis, Giddings put up a great fight but caved to the Willis offense ending the game with a score of 5-2.

In addition to the excellent offensive attack put forth by the crew from Giddings, tournament highlights include Caitie Carney's homerun against Navasota in the first game and Heather Hartfield's homerun in the championship game against Willis.

Lady Buffs stand out pitchers were junior Teshia Krause (who has seen limited playing time on Varsity because of a hand injury), freshman Heather Belyeu and freshman Caitie Carney.

GHS Softball Fall In State Poll

The Lady Buffs softball team fell from 6th to 11th in last weeks TGCA poll. The squad has lost several important games in recent outings but the losses came at the the hands of 4A and 5A opponents. Giddings lost to 4A Brenham, the Cubettes are ranked 2nd in the state poll at the 4A level. Inconsistent hitting has plagued the Lady Buffs in many game that were close enough to win but the girls failed to claim success at the plate. Giddings will host 3A Madisonville for Parent's night on Monday March 3, a game that was originally scheduled for Tuesday but was changed because of TAKS testing conflicts. The team will begin district play on March 14 in LaGrange.

Magnolia Is Tough Opponent For Lady Buffs

The Lady Buffs fell to 5A Magnolia 2-0 Tuesday night after playing a tight game. The Giddings squad succumbed to the Lady Bulldogs offense late in the game giving up two runs in the bottom of the 6th inning. Giddings will enjoy an open night on Friday, February 29 before their first home game on March 4 against Madisonville. The outing has been designated as Parents Night.

Klein ISD Tournament Scores 2/23/08

The Lady Buff Klein High schoolsmoked 5A Cy-Creek by a score of 7-2 in their first game of the Klein tournament which was played this morning in Houston. Freshman Caitie Carney pitched for Giddings, she struck out several of the Cy-Creek batters and walked only two while on the mound. This was the first high school start from the circle for the GHS freshman and possibly a sign of good things come for the Lady Buffs in the years ahead. Giddings advanced into the winners bracket of the tournament, a bracket that was redrawn because of the Thursday rain outs. The girls will meet Klein High in the next round which is scheduled to begin at 2:00 pm.

Game 2: The Lady Buff lost a close one to 5A Klein High; 2-1. The group had trouble at the plate but played well on defense. Giddings will travel to Magnolia Tuesday to face the 5A Lady Bulldogs.

Lady Buffs Struggle In Brenham Contest

2/19/08 After inching their way up to No. 6 in the Texas High School softball polls the Lady Buffs dropped another game losing to 4A Brenham 3-0. Brenham is ranked No. 7 in the state 4A bracket. The Cubettes held the Giddings offense to the scoreless finish. Giddings struggled at the plate and continued to abandon their base runners. Giddings threatened at points in the game but failed to finish leaving the bases loaded as the side was retired. The Lady Buffs defense also suffered with five errors giving Brenham too many chances to squeeze out their three scores. Giddings has a tough pre-district schedule ahead meeting several 4A and 5A teams, tough competition, which should prove to strengthen the squad before they start district play in mid March. The next stop for Giddings is the Klein ISD tournament which begins Thursday, February 21st.

Lady Buffs Lose Two In Georgetown Tournament
The Lady Buffs softball team dropped two games in the Georgetown tournament on Thursday losing to 4A Aledo 7-2 in the first game and then to 5A Georgetown 4-1 in the second game.

Giddings struggled at the plate leaving runners stranded at critical points in both games.

The Georgetown squad was loaded with "big hitters", their 3rd baseman claimed two home run shots deep into centerfield in the early innings of the contest. The Lady Buffs defense hung in there and played well near the end of the game working hard to turn several double plays to keep Giddings in the game. Giddings tried to rally in the 7th, batting at the top of the lineup, but once again left runners hanging. Weise did a good job on the mound but the final inning surge came too late for Giddings to claim the lead. Head coach Kristy Bradford was out due to illness, a circumstance that likely added frustration to the situation making it hard for Giddings to play "their game".

The Lady Buffs will look to get back on track today playing 3A Lorena at noon, and then 5A Temple at 4pm.
