Howard is coached by Britt Smith, 2009 NJCAA Coach of the Year. Hawks Assistant Coach J-Bob Thomas released a statement regarding Plumlee saying "we are truly happy to have signed such a quality player."

Plumlee signed his NJCAA national letter of intent on January 15, the first day of early signing, but formalized the event on Monday with a reception at the GHS Library.

Last year, as a junior, Plumlee played catcher for the Buffaloes baseball team that advanced to the State tournament. He is the third player from the team to accept a college offer.
