Xavier Daniels Named 3A Defensive Player of the Year

12/16/08  Giddings defensive back Xavier Daniels was named 3A Defensive Player of the Year today by the Associated Press Sports Editors.

Xavier recorded 83 tackles and had 10 interceptions during the regular season. He also returned a blocked PAT for a touchdown and ran a kickoff back for a touchdown.

Xavier was recognized with 1st Team All-State honors and then was chosen as the defensive standout.

The AP Sports Editors base their All-State picks on regular season stats, Xavier also had a great post season run with the Buffaloes adding multiple tackles and another five interceptions to his final tally.

Giddings Falls To Carthage, Finish Season As DII Quarter-Final Champion

12/15/08  A well-rounded offensive attack by the Bulldogs combined with a defense that stuffed Giddings’ option-based running game proved to be more than the Buffaloes could handle Saturday night as they fell in their semi-final match-up against Carthage.

The Bulldogs routed the Buffaloes 41-14, working their way to a berth in the State Final game which will be held next Saturday night.

Carthage running back Dwight Smith led the way for the Bulldogs gaining 298 yards on 22 carries with five touchdowns. O’Bryan Washington reeled in 29 yards, on eight attempts for the Bulldogs while Jarvin Robinson netted 35 yards on two tries.

Carthage quarterback Si’Darius Blackshire completed 5 of 10 well-timed passes for 39 yards. Blackshire scored the other Bulldog touchdown, crossing the line on a one yard quarterback keeper in the second quarter.

The Bulldogs racked up 380 yards while the Buffaloes settled for 303 - just five more than Carthage’s Smith had on his own.

Corey Brite led the running effort for the Buffaloes logging 108 yards on 15 tries, while David Bradshaw shuffled eight times for 63 yards.

Carthage smothered fullback Eric Rimes who had averaged 125 yards per game prior to Saturday’s match-up. The Bulldogs limited Rimes to only 39 yards on 14 attempts.

Rimes managed to score during the first drive for Giddings, a march that covered 62 yards and ended with a touchdown run from the two yard line.

Giddings QB Trey Masek claimed the second touchdown for the Buffs, a score that came during the second quarter with a 26 yard run. Masek didn’t attempt a pass in the contest but carried 22 times for a total of 93 yards.

A strong, quick, and very determined Bulldog squad will head to Texas Stadium next weekend to meet Celina who trounced Liberty Hill, 40-12, in the other 3A semi-final game.

The Buffaloes finish with the title of 2008 Quarter-Final Champion, a label that (probably) no one predicted for them back in August. The young squad struggled but finally gained respect, ending the season in a position that surprised 3A football followers throughout the state.

Hard work and a sense of TEAM carried the Buffaloes this year and will likely help the group move into 2009 and eventually contend for a spot in next year's post season round-up.

Buffs Hold Off Brahmas, Achieve Victory In Double OT

12/06/08  The Buffaloes matchup with Bellville went to double overtime Friday night ending as Giddings punched in a touchdown and kicked a game winning extra point to top their district rival, 21-20. The winning overtime drive came after each team mounted unsuccessful attempts in the first overtime period.

Giddings struck first after driving to the one yard line iearly in the second period. Trey Masek slipped through to score on a one yard quarterback keeper. Berry's kick put Giddings on top 7-0.

The Buffalo defense wreaked havoc on Bellville's quarterback Kyle Mueller rendering him ineffective for most of the first half.

With 3:53 left before halftime, Eric Rimes rumbled past the Brahmas defense on a 20 yard scamper to add another touchdown to the Giddings total. Berry hit the extra point and Giddings went to the break with a 14-0 lead.

After a lackluster third period, two fourth-quarter fumbles by the Buffaloes gave Bellville the opportunity to get back in the ball game. The Brahmas scored on a 23 yard pass from QB Kyle Mueller to Wayne Houston immediately after the first fumble, bringing the tally to 14-7.

Within seconds the Buffaloes fumbled again and Bellville defender Jeremy Jackson scooped up the loose ball for a 25 yard Bellville score.

With the score tied 14-14 the competition went into overtime.

Both of the defenses held strong in the first overtime, Bellville held off Giddings on a fourth-and-four to get their first turn from the 25 yard line.

The Brahmas couldn’t get things going on offense and after stalling out at the 20 yard line they opted to rely on their kicker and a 37 yard field goal to win the game. Bellville missed on the attempt which went wide left, missing its mark by about six inches.

During the second overtime period Bellville had the ball first and scrambled, eventually scoring from the two yard line. Their ensuing extra point kick was blocked by Giddings defender Frankie Mathis an event that offered Giddings an opportunity to take the lead and the game if they could score and add their extra point.

The Buffs ground their way down to inside the one yard line and Trey Masek crunched it in from there. Berry came on and sealed the deal with the extra point which ended the contest at 21-20.

The Buffaloes registered 424 total yards on offense. Giddings fullback Eric Rimes racked up 166 yards on 30 carries and scored one touchdown but left the game during the fourth quarter after suffering a blow to the head. Corey Brite added 117 yards on 12 attempts, while Masek scored twice and logged 51 yards on 17 carries. Masek completed one of two passes for 32 yards and threw one interception.

Giddings gave up two of three fumbles and was penalized three times for 20 yards.

The win gives the Buffs a berth in the State Semi Finals. After tonight they will be one of only four teams left in the Division II 3A playoffs.

The Buffaloes await the winner of tonight's Region 3 matchup between Gilmer and Carthage. Early reports have next week's Semi- Final game on Saturday at 6:00 p.m. in Corsicana.

Buffs Batter Rio Hondo, Claim Title

11/29/08  The Giddings Buffaloes battered the Bobcats of Rio Hondo Friday, using three successful defensive stands to take control of the game.

The biggest of the three “turn-downs” for the Buffaloes occured at the goal line, Rio Hondo was faced with a fourth-and-one. The Buffs stuffed Rio Hondo fullback Trevor David, keeping him from crossing the line and the ball went over to Giddings on downs. The defensive effort pumped up the Buffaloes and changed the momentum of the contest with 3:47 left to go in the third quarter.

After receiving the opening kick-off Rio Hondo got on the board first, scoring on their first drive with a three yard run by David. The touchdown came with 9:17 left in the first quarter and gave the Bobcats the early lead.

Giddings countered within the next two minutes when Eric Rimes rumbled in from the 40. Zach Berry added a kick and the score was tied 7-7.

Rio Hondo QB Justin Vela hooked up with Oscar Martinez on a 30 yard touchdown pass and the Bobcats quickly took back the lead at 14-7.

Giddings fought back with a 2 yard touchdown run by QB Trey Masek and the score was tied once again, 14-14.

The Giddings defense made their first stand at the 10:04 point in the second quarter leading to an eventual score by David Bradshaw from the five yard line. Berry’s kick gave the Buffaloes a 21-14 lead with 7:49 left before the half.

The Bobcats weren’t finished though, scoring on a one yard run by Trevor David. The teams went to the locker room for the break tied at 21.

Giddings received the second half kick-off and marched straight down the field to take a one touchdown lead when Masek scored on a 13 yard scamper.  Berry’s kick put the Buffs on top, 28-21.

Rio Hondo drove down to the one yard line but the Giddings defense squashed their effort holding off David on his attempt to go through the middle and the Buffs took over at the one. This stand proved to be a game breaker for the Bobcats and seemed to drain the squad which was already struggling to keep up with the speedy Giddings offense.

Giddings’ ensuing offensive effort was short and sweet using only three plays to go 99 yards and Rimes had another score with a 44 yard dash to the end zone. Berry added the extra point and the Buff’s lead moved to 35-21.

With :33 seconds to go in the third the Giddings defense took charge again holding the Bobcats off on a 4th-and-16. The big Rio Hondo offensive line was worn out and the gaping holes they had produced in the beginning were no longer there for FB David and QB Vela to slip through.

Masek hit Rio Hondo for a one yard touchdown on a quarterback keeper. The Buffs went up 42-21 with 10:56 left in the game.

Rio Hondo quarterback Vela wasn’t finished and claimed another score when he connected on a 40 yard touchdown pass to bring the tally to 42-28.

Rio Hondo made an unsuccessfully attempt at an onside kick but their defense stood up and held off another Buffalo run. This last ditch effort wasn’t nearly enough and the game ended with a Buffalo win, 42-28.
