Giddings Freshmen Girls basketball team finishes season 30-0

2/8/09  The Lady Buffs freshman team ends their 08-09 season with an un-beaten record, the group beat LaGrange 54-10 on Tuesday night and took down Smithville 51-19 on Friday to celebrate a perfect season record of 29-0.

Tuesday nights game with Columbus has been forfeited by the Cardinals. The Giddings squad has finished their stellar year at 30-0.

In the LaGrange game, Giddings led 27-5 by halftime then cruised for the entire second half to get the 44 point win. Leading the scoring for the Giddings was Darrecia Johnson with 20 points, followed by Nece Reece with 11. Kalyn Morgan  sank 8 and Allyson Roberts had 7, while Britainni Gallier, Mckayla Alva, Tanya Moreno, and Jackie Rodriquiz each had 2 points.

On Friday night, the freshmen led Smithville 33-4 at halftime and rolled on in the second half for the 32 point victory. The leading scorers for the young Lady Buffs were McKayla Alva, Allyson Roberts, and Darrecia Johnson who each had 11 points. Other scorers were Tavia Richard 5, Nece Reese and Marissa Ruiz with 4 each, Kalyn Morgan 3, and Tanya Moreno with 2 points. Skyler Lehman and Jackie Rodriquez and played well on defense.

Coach Curtis Lindell said, “It’s been a lot of fun to coach this special group of girls with their athletic ability, skills, and teamwork on offense and defense.”

Lady Buffs all but seal the deal for the District 25-3A Title

2/6/09  Giddings all but sealed the deal regarding the District 25-3A championship title, slamming Smithville Friday night by a score of 59-39. The Lady Buffs are now looking to their final game against Columbus, expecting to wrap up the regular season with a big victory to gain the coveted "bye" to start their 2009 playoff run.

The Lady Buffs got off to a slow start and struggled to stay with Smithville as the first period ended with the Lady Tigers up by one 14-13.

The girls seemed to get in "sync" during the second period, managing a five point lead at halftime, 30-25.

Giddings came out in the third and slammed the Lady Tigers, outscoring the home team 14-6, and taking a 44-31 lead. By the end of three the Smithville squad was "spent" and they struggled to keep up with the Lady Buffs and the depth that the Buffalo bench has to offer.

In the forth period the Lady Buffs once again outscored the Tigers, and simply outlasted Smithville with a big finish and a 59-39 victory.

Giddings sophomore post player, Cassidy Melcher, led all scoring with 14 points. Cassidy had a phenomenal game as she led the team in scoring, had countless rebounds and numerous blocked shots.

Sophomore Caitie Carney and freshman Kayla Winkfield followed Cassidy's lead with 10 points each, while junior Meagan Bradley added 7. Juniors Jena Meuth and Jordan Masek sank 5 points apiece and senior Jennifer Roberts managed 4.

Freshman guard Alex Masek  came off the bench and drained a three, while sophomore Heather Belyeu took advantage of a Smithville foul - with less than a second left in the game (00.51) - and hit one of her two free throws to bring the Giddings lead to 20 points.

Friday's win was the result of a total team effort and the un-selfish play of a young Lady Buffs team who walked on to the court with nothing to loose and absolutely everything to gain.

According to the banners hanging in the GHS gymnasium the Lady Buffs haven't claimed a district championship since 1992. Many of the current team members weren't even alive the last time the Giddings girls finished on top. The 2009 championship is theirs for the taking on Tuesday, and this young, scrappy squad has earned it.

District 25-3A standings: 1st: Giddings (8-1), 2nd: LaGrange (7-2), 3rd: Smithville (6-3)

Lady Buffs hope to wrap up district title with win Friday

2/5/09  The Lady Buffs will travel to Smithville Friday with the hopes of wrapping up the District 25-3A championship title. A win over the Lady Tigers will (most likely) earn the Lady Buffs the title and an opportunity to enter the state playoffs with a first round bye.

Giddings will enter Friday's contest with a district record of 7-1, their only loss came at the hands of LaGrange on Tuesday. Smithville's record sits at 5-3 after losses to Giddings, LaGrange and Sealy.

The entire district, including the Smithville squad, was surprised Tuesday night when Sealy beat Smithville by a score of 39-37. The last time the two met was in January, Smithville took the win, 70-45. Giddings beat Smithville 61-51 in their first meeting.

Giddings fought hard Tuesday in a very physical game in LaGrange, but the Lady Leopards pulled off the three point win in the final minutes of the matchup.

LaGrange got off to an early lead and finished the first quarter, up by three at 13-10. Both teams had doubled their scores by halftime, going to the break with LaGrange on top, 26-20.

Giddings came out and rallied in the third to claim a one point advantage at 47-46. The lead changed hands several times until the end with LaGrange ahead 59-56 at the buzzer.

Jena Meuth led the scoring for Giddings finishing with 20 points. Kayla Winkfield and Cassidy Melcher racked up 10 apiece and Meagan Bradley followed with 7. Jordan Masek added 5 while Caitie Carney had 4.

No matter how Friday night's game turns out the Lady Buffs will finish with one of the best regular seasons in years. But... a district title, most people can't remember the last time that happened.

Xavier is the son of Elvera Davis and John Mathis and the late Charles Daniels. He received accolades during the 2008 football season because of his accomplishments at defensive back for the Buffaloes.
He saw action on both sides of the ball for the Buffs and was used in various rolls on special teams. Xavier managed over 83 tackles and returned a blocked PAT for a touchdown. He also ran a kickoff back for a touchdown on special teams, but didn't officially catch the attention of Texas football fans, sportswriters, and coaches until he hauled in his 15th interception of the season.

Xavier is a well rounded student
who excels at football, track and in the classroom.

Xavier raked in various credits for last years performance on the field, with two of the highlights coming in December and January when he was selected to the Texas Sportswriter's Association and the Associated Press All- state teams. Xavier was honored by both groups as their 3A Defensive Player of the Year.

Giddings defensive back Xavier Daniels honored again

1/29/09  Giddings defensive back Xavier Daniels was honored again for his 2008 performance on the football field.

On Wednesday, the Texas Sportswriters Association (TSWA) named Daniels its 2008 Defensive Player of the Year for Class 3A.
Xavier received statewide acclaim this past season as the Buffaloes went deep into the playoffs. He managed 15 interceptions - 10 during the regular season and five in post season play. Xavier recorded over 83 tackles and returned a blocked PAT for a touchdown and ran a kickoff back for a touchdown on special teams.

He was also recognized by the Associated Press in December, garnering a spot on their all-state team and being picked out as their 3A Defensive Player of the Year.

Dwight Smith, the 5'11", 220 lbs. senior running back form Carthage, was named the TSWA offensive Player of the Year in 3A. Smith logged 298 yards rushing during the quarterfinal game with Giddings and had 2,820 yards and 43 touchdowns for the season.

Xavier plans to attend Texas State in the fall and has been offered a scholarship to play for the Bobcats.

A handful of Buffalo seniors have been courted as college football prospects and are hoping for an opportunity to play at the college level, national signing day is next week.
