Two GHS powerlifters advance to Boy's State meet

Two GHS powerlifters who competed at Regionals Saturday were able to advance to the upcoming State meet which will be held on March 27th in Abilene.

 

Colby Wollin and Morgan Hohle each placed first in their respective weight classes (WC), Wolllin broke two Regional records in the process.

 

Wollin (198 WC) lifted for a combined total of 1605 pounds in the three lift categories; squat 625 pounds, bench 370 pounds and dead lift 610 pounds. Wollin out lifted the second place competitor by a total of 110 pounds. He broke the Region record in the squat and the bench but only kept the record for the squat category. After Wolin beat the record in the bench press a lifter from Taylor High School took claimed the record, lifting 375 pounds - five more pounds than Wollin.  

 

Giddings lifter Morgan Hohle (242 WC) finished in first place in his weight class with a combined lift total of 1465 pounds. Hohle managed to lift 590 pounds in the squat, 355 pounds in the bench press and 520 pounds in the dead lift.

 

Two other Giddings lifters contended for State positions; Tyler McCoy (181 WC) finished in third place with a combined lift total of 1295 pounds, while Doug McCoy (118 WC) placed fourth lifting a combined 740 pounds. Neither was able to qualify for State as only they top two finishers in each weight class are allowed to advance. Tyler and Doug will attend the State meet as alternates.  

 

As a team, Giddings finished in fourth place with a total of 19 points. Taylor placed first with 29 points, Navasota placed second with 25 points and Waco LaVega placed third with 24 points. Two other District 25 schools competed at the meet; Sealy placed seventh with 12 points and Smithville placed ninth with nine points.

Giddings girls advance to State in powerlifting

Two Lady Buff powerlifters advanced to the State Powerlifting meet  by finishing in second and third places in the regional meet which was held yesterday in Elgin.

Lifter Brianna Johnson finished in second place while Amber Bischoff finished in third place. The pair will advance to the State Championship meet which will be held on March 20th in Corpus Christi.

The Regional meet for the boys is slated for next Saturday, March 13th at La Vega High School in Waco.

Both the girls and boys teams are coached by Derrick Hennigan.


GHS qualifies seven athletes for Regional Powerlifting meets

Seven Giddings High School (GHS) athletes qualified for the Regional Powerlifting meets which will be held March 6th for girls and March 13th for boys.

Two Lady Buffs advanced to their Regional meet which will be held in Elgin this Saturday. Amber Bischoff and Brianna Johnson will lift for the Buffaloes.

Five boys will compete at their Regional meet which will be held in Waco at La Vega High School. Colby Wollin, Morgan Hohle, Tyler McCoy, Doug McCoy, and Tony Sanchez will compete for Giddings. Buffalo Eddie Casares is an alternate for the squad.

All of these students are vying for a spot at the state meets which will be held later this month. The Girls championship meet is scheduled for March 20th in Corpus Christi and the boys meet will be in Abilene on March 27th.   

 

 

GHS Softball team claims 3rd in Caldwell tourney

The Giddings High School softball team claimed third place in the Silver bracket of the Caldwell Tournament Saturday, winning two of three tournament games during Saturday's competition.

Giddings finished 4th in pool play for the tournament which began on Thursday.

Saturday morning the Lady Buffs posted an 8-3 victory over Manor in game one, but came up short in game two losing to Victoria Memorial with a final score of 6-1.

By Saturday afternoon the girls had re-grouped and came out on top in game three, defeating Waco University by 10-1.

Freshman Callie Gerdes pitched for the Lady Buffs who are missing four players that are currently involved in the girls basketball playoffs.

According to Head Softball Coach Kristi Bradford the softball game against Industrial, scheduled for Tuesday, February 23rd, has cancelled so that team members can support the the girls basketball team in their Round 3 game against Sam Houston.

Coach Bradford said she fully supports the girls who are working toward a State basketball title and does not expect to have her whole team on the diamond until after the State Basketball Tournament has ended.
