Giddings to face Jasper

Tuesday, June 8, 2010

The Giddings baseball team advanced to the State tournament Saturday after posting two big victories over Boerne, 4-1 and 3-1. The Buffs claimed the Region 4 championship and will face Jasper the Region 3 champion. (LCL Photo: Senior pitcher Trey Masek)

Jasper (35-4) made their way to the tournament after winning the District 18 title. The Bulldogs finished at the top of their conference with a 13-1 record. Jasper's formidable district foes include last year's state champion Carthage and regional contender Lufkin Hudson.

As far as the playoff go, they received a round-one bye then knocked off Crockett (9-4, 6-4), Lufkin Hudson (13-7, 10-0), Bridge City (5-10, 9-2, 4-2), and Orangefield (5-4, 8-3) in bracket play. Bridge City and Orangefield were highly touted teams that ranked high in polls across the state.

This is Jasper's seventh appearance at the state tournament, the last time they were there was in 2007. Last year Jasper lost to the eventual state champion Carthage in the regional quarterfinals.

Giddings maintained a high ranking this season and enters the playoffs with a 31-2-1 record, losing only in pre-district competition to Robinson and LaGrange. (LCL Photo: Senior pitcher Ty Marlow)

The State semifinal game is scheduled to begin at 7 P.M. at Disch Faulk Field in Austin on Wednesday.
