This
week Xavier has been nominated for the Statesman.com Player of the Week
and the texasfootball.com Player of the Week. Both of the nominations
were based on his game performance last Friday night. While he may or
may not win these two coveted titles he is hands down "Lives" pick for
Athlete of the Week.
It was at some point during the third quarter of Friday night's game
when we made the decision to select "X" for
our player
of the week. By that time he had four interceptions and by the time it
was over he had hauled in "pick" number five.
Xavier's effort helped the Buffaloes at a time when both of their
quarterbacks were banged up. It also worked to hinder Smithville's
attack. Xavier's effort gave Giddings several extra opportunities
to put points on the board and, at the same time, wore down the
Smithville defense.
Xavier has competed in football, basketball and track in Giddings since
the seventh grade. He has been blessed with brains, height and quickness
- he uses all of these attributes to his advantage.
Xavier plays on both sides of the ball and is used in various rolls on
special teams for the Buffs. He is a well rounded athlete and, simply
put, is a great kid.
It's hard to catch Xavier at a time when he has not got a smile on his
face. He is good natured and has managed to stay humble despite his
success on the field.
"X" is an excellent
student and was selected to attend
Last winter Xavier, along with friend Madison Griffin, volunteered to
coach his niece and his nephew and their "Little Dribblers" basketball
team. He quickly and gently commanded the respect of the 9&10 year old
group and the team ended the season as champions of their division. Xavier is the son of Elvera Davis & John Mathis, and the late Charles Daniels.
Xavier would like to attend college and given is ability and speed he
may have a chance to continue competing, either in football or track.
Friday's performance has offered Xavier a chance to get noticed by
others outside of the Giddings community, it's about time... we knew it
all along.
Rush Plumlee can best be described as an athlete who knows no bounds. When he competes Rush gives 111%. On the football field, Rush made the move from starting linebacker last year, as a sophomore, to running the offense at quarterback this year. He has seen success and has, with the help of his teammates, been able to claim the top spot for "points scored" in the district. He also holds the number two spot in the district in rushing yards, second only to Giddings fullback Eric Rimes. When Rush moved into the quarterback position he had big shoes to fill. After eight games Rush has logged 1067 yards and has scored 90 points, including 13 touchdown and numerous two-point conversions. Until this summer Rush had never taken a snap. Rush usually steps onto the field with a "can do" attitude and you will most likely see him do whatever it takes to win a game. Rush is a two-sport athlete, who plays and excels at football and baseball. He is the son of Mike and Lynann Plumlee and is the "little" brother to his Texas Tech Red Raider sister, Logan. Expect to see Rush giving it "all he's got" to help the Buffs make the playoffs - with a winning finish to the regular season and a long run in post season play.
This year, as a senior for the Buffaloes, Zach has played tight end, played on the defensive line in short yardage situations, played on the kick-off team, kick-off return team and now kicks extra points. He started the year as the back-up kicker for Giddings but found himself in the lead role after the Elgin game. Zach almost never leaves the field. Zach has been called by many "the best athlete on the team". He was blessed with size and strength and has maintained his speed and coordination by playing three sports; football, basketball and baseball. So far this year Zach has man-handled many of his opponents, blocking on the O-line and opening (sometimes gaping) holes for Giddings' backs to slip through. Zach is the son of Denise Berry and the grandson of proud grandparents Gayle and Peggy Berry. He has started to become a mature young man and has moved into a team captain, leadership role on the Buffaloes football squad. Don't be surprised if you hear Zach's name mentioned at the end of the year as a football scholarship contender, possibly Division 1.
Eric rushed for 120 yards and snatched a 21 yard reception for the Buffs in the 27-21 win over Sealy. He ended the game with a bang, scoring on a nine yard touchdown run with 16 seconds left to play in the game, all but sealing the victory for the Buffaloes. This year Eric has grown into a force to be reckoned with and is destined to become a powerhouse runner for Giddings next year as he begins his Junior year. That's right, he's just a sophomore and is scoring against some of the states top talent. Even after being listed earlier this year as a possible "breakout" player by texasfootball.com Eric has remained as humble as ever and is the ultimate team player. Eric is a three sport athlete who excels at football, basketball and track while maintaining an excellent academic standing. He is the son of Eric and Chenna Rimes and is the oldest of five children.
In his first Varsity start at quarterback he logged 221 yards on 26 carries, scoring three touchdowns. He also completed one of two passes for a 48 yard touchdown. Plumlee is expected to return to the field this Friday as the Buffs begin district play against Sealy. If Plumlee is able to return to the offense, Masek will return to his previous position of defensive back. As far as Masek's performance last Friday, it's nice to know that Giddings has a number two man who can step in and get the job done.

Billy Bob Moore & "Spotlights On Pepto" Win At Cutting Horse Summer Spectacular Submitted by: Allen's Quarterhorses
Moore and "Spotlights On Pepto" picked up the biggest victory of either’s career by winning the John Deere Classic/Challenge Limited Open with a 219 to earn $5,900 on Sunday, July 20 at the NCHA Summer Spectacular. (Photo by: nchaphotos.com) Spotlights On Pepto and Moore just missed making the July 21 Classic/Challenge finals after two go’s with a 213-218.5–431.5, a half-point off the 432 qualifying bubble. However, they marked a 214 in the wildcard round later in the day on July 20. They failed to advance but the pair earned another $4,000 in winnings. "Spotlights On Pepto" is the only aged-event horse Moore is campaigning. He competes regularly with several other horses at weekend events. "Spotlights On Pepto" (Peptoboonsmal x Miss Shorty Paloma x Shorty Lena), 5, is owned by Kevin and Georgia Allen, of Lexington, Texas. The horse had just over $7,000 in prior earnings. Billy Bob has worked with "Spotlights On Pepto" since the stallion’s 2-year-old season. Moore rode "Spotlights On Pepto" as reserve champion of the $3,000 Novice at the Houston Livestock and Rodeo, and won the NCHA Day Show at Athens, TX with 77 points. Currently, "Spotlights On Pepto" has earned in excess of $21,000 in NCHA and ACHA competition. Moore has dabbled in cutting since his teens, but he spent most of his time during his 20's and 30's working at Caldwell Ranch, a 14,000-acre cattle operation previously headed by his father and grandfather. He managed the ranch for about 10 years. After his family sold the ranch 10 years ago, Moore, his wife, Esther, and their daughter, Cheyenne, now 18, settled on smaller portion of land and he started training horses. Prior to Sunday’s success, he had earned about $24,000 as a cutting horse rider. "Spotlights On Pepto" also stands as a breeding stallion and he appears poised to make a bigger name for himself in his last year and a half as an aged event competitor, Moore said. His own recent success as a trainer, Moore said, is largely due to advice and help he’s received over the years from several friends in the cutting business, including longtime trainers Ronnie Rice, Craig Thompson and Roy Carter. Students were given the green light from the district last year and the first GHS soccer teams took the field this January. The boys and girls teams have competed for the past several weeks and have seen marked progress in the development of the program playing against teams from larger districts (many 3A schools don't have soccer programs). Earlier in the season the Giddings boys squad met up with a Brenham team that was a 4A regional finalist last year and were able to compete against the larger more experienced school. The group suffered a 3-1 loss but gained valuable game experience. Both the boys and girls teams expect to compete in more of these type outings in the future and if their efforts this year are any indication fans can expect for GHS to field another championship caliber program. Tuesday night the girls team met Lockhart JV. They lost the game 2-1 but showed improvement in all areas of the game. The girls will play this weekend in the Brenham tournament beginning on Saturday. The boys will play on Monday at 6:00 p.m. against Manor JV. These Buffaloes are currently under the direction of GISD Cross County coach Jim Pat Darcy, who has praised the inaugural group for it's guts, determination and extreme work ethic.
