Chamber reports successful Christmas Merry Marketplace

According to Giddings Chamber of Commerce Director Denice Harlan this year's  Christmas Merry Marketplace was a huge success.

The Chamber has worked year-round to promote this event which is one of the largest projects in the Chamber program. Many hours were spent working on the vendor list, sponsorships, advertising and promotion of the event. The Chamber reported that they hosted 55 vendors this year;  32 inside and 23 outside. Craftsman from the Giddings area, as well as from around-the-state were on hand to sell their goods. The turnout was better than in previous years.

Santa was inside the Landmark Event Center hearing requests from children, while guest were treated to music for their listening pleasure.

The Rural Texas Tourism Center was open for tours from 12:00 P.M. to 4PM. This year's event was blessed with perfect weather, it was a great day of Giddings in many ways.

The Chamber is already planning their "Spring Fling" and the "Merry Marketplace" for next year.



Food Protection Management course offered

The Lee County office of Texas AgriLife Extension Service will offer a Food Protection Management Training on Tuesday, December 1, at the Extension office, located at 310 South Grimes in Giddings.  Class will begin at 8:30 am.
Registration is ongoing.  Information is available at the Lee County Extension office or on-line at http://lee-tx.tamu.edu, click on the "Events" tab.  Registration is $100 and includes the course book and exam.  The training is a certified course, accepted by the Texas Department of Health.

Chamber to host Christmas Merry Marketplace: Venue changed to Landmark Square


The Giddings Chamber of Commerce is set to host the Christmas Merry Marketplace again this year the event is planned for Sunday, November 22nd beginning at 10 A.M. This year the marketplace has been moved to the Landmark Square Complex in downtown Giddings near the Tourism Center and Depot.

This year's event will spotlight arts and crafts, stained glass art, hand-crafted jewelry, live music and there will be a visit from Santa. Local artists will be on hand, as well as others from around the area. Other items include floral decor, furniture and wood art.

The new venue offers local business the opportunity to attract holiday shoppers with coupons and specials that are good throughout the course of Sunday's event and into the month of December.



GHS Leo Club to collect used eyeglasses at Friday football game

The GHS Leo Club will be collecting used eyeglasses at the Buffaloes football game this Friday night, November 6th.

The Leos have made "Sight Night" a yearly project which they usually schedule on Halloween only. This year the club decided to have Buffalo fans bring glasses to them, in addition to going door-to-door to collect.

Members of the group will be posted at a table in a designated area before the game begins and during halftime.

The Giddings Leo Club is sponsored by the Giddings New Horizons Lions Club. All glasses collected will be sent to a facility to be refurbished and then will be made available to those who cannot afford to purchase new glasses. 

On Halloween the group collected 91 pair and will add the Friday collection to that to hopefully have a positive impact on those in need.

Texas Plant Protection Conference

 

December 2 and 3

 

The 21st Texas Plant Protection Conference will be held on December 2 and 3 at the Brazos Center in Bryan.  This annual conference, hosted by the Texas Plant Protection Association (TPPA), showcases the latest in agricultural technology and practices, plus provides insight and analysis to critical issues affecting the industry.

 

Farmer Day will be Dec. 2.  There is not a charge for full-time farmers who pre-register before Nov. 20.  Registration forms are available at on-line at http://tppa.tamu.edu.

 

“We’ve assembled some prominent speakers who are experts in virtually every sector of agriculture,” said Brad Minton, president of TPPA. “Farmers throughout the state will want to attend this conference since it serves as a good planning aid heading into the 2010 crop season and gives producers a first-hand look at the some of the new cutting-edge technologies we may be seeing in the future.”

 

The keynote speaker will be Bob Stallman, president of the American Farm Bureau Federation.  Other speakers and topics include: Dr. Mark Welch, Texas AgriLife Extension Service grains economist, Market Outlooks on Grain and Wheat; Mac Young, AgriLife Extension agent-Corpus Christi, Economics of Field Storage of Corn in Plastic Bags; Ray Smith, Biological Research Ser-vices Inc., Using Aflaguard in Managing Aflatoxins in Corn.

 

Other topics to be presented include: weed management tools for corn and sorghum in Texas; new cotton trait technologies; and other scheduled presentations and discussions.

Holiday Cooking Class offered November 9

Texas AgriLife Extension Service of Lee County is hosting a Holiday cooking class on Monday, November 9, in the Extension office located at  310 South Grimes, Giddings.

This class will emphasis on healthier cooking for the holiday season, featuring delicious recipes.  There will an opportunity for taste testing.
All ages are welcome.

There will also be a special session featuring Creative Table Decoration Ideas.  Discover how to create a festive table arrangement without spending more than on your grocery list.

Please RSVP by November 2, by call the Extension office at (979) 542-2752.  Registration is $5 per person.

Food Show Project Meeting - October 25
There will be a Lee County 4-H Food Show Project on Sunday, October 25, at 2 pm in the Extension office in Giddings.  All youth are invited.  The Food Challenge competition will be introduced.
Participating 4-H’ers will compete in the County Food Show, scheduled for Sunday, December 13.  Qualifying participants will then advance to the District Food Show.

Pecan Sale – Poinsettia Sale
Helping prepare the community for the approaching Holiday Season, The Lee County 4-H is taking orders for fresh Pecans and beautiful Poinsettia plants.  Orders may be placed with any Lee County 4-H member or by contacting the Extension Office.

Pecan orders are due to the Extension office by Thursday, October 29.  Poinsettia orders are due on Monday, December 9.

Pecan Bake Show - November 24
4-H’ers are reminded of the Lee/Burleson County Pecan Bake Show on Tuesday, November 24.  Lee County youth, ages 18 and under, are welcome to enter two recipes in each class.  Classes include: breads, cakes, candies, cookies, pies and miscellaneous.
Rules and entry forms are available from the Extension office.

PVA/4-H Council Meetings - December 7
The Parent Volunteer Association and 4-H Council will meet on Monday, December 7, at 7 pm in the Extension office.
Members of the Lee County 4-H program and their families are invited to attend the meeting.
Please call the Extension office if you have any questions or would like to propose an item to be added to the agenda.
Southern Classic - December 12 & 13
On December 12 & 13, the Lee County Extension office, along with other area county Extension personnel, will host the Southern Classic Youth Livestock Project Experience.  This event is an educational livestock clinic and show.  It will be held in Bryan at the Brazos County Exposition Complex, located at 5827 Leonard Road, just off Hwy 47.

The event is open to all 4-H and FFA members.  Its pur­pose is to educate and assist youth that are raising livestock show projects, and to help them learn more about their project and be better prepared for the upcoming show season.
There is no entry fees asso­ciated with the program.  It is free for youth and their fami­lies to attend and exhibit their projects.
Please RSVP by November 30 to the Extension office with your intent to attend and the type of animal you will exhibit.

In order to participate in the Sunday competition, exhibitors must attend the Saturday presentation.  Sunday competition exhibitors will each receive an item useful to their project.
